I downloaded the Far Cry demo a long while ago, whenever it actually came out. I had a brief moment of "huh, this looks cool, but what the heck am I trying to do" before -- I kid you not -- my spare monitor broke. I got distracted by other things, and only recently got around to hooking my PC back up to a monitor. Of course, Far Cry had been picking at the back of my head this whole time, especially ever since I was at Fry's a few weeks back, and saw some kid playing it on a demo system, and watching the amazing way that the foliage cast soft, shifting shadows on the character's gun. Wow.

Long story short, I bought the game a few days ago, and finally had a chance to play it for an hour or so today. My first comment is that the graphics are incredible. Once I turned everything up from medium (which the autodetector recommended) to high, the foliage of the island sprung to life around me. The bright blues of the sky and the water took my breath away. The ambient noise of the island was perfect. My second comment is that being able to wander around the island is pretty amazing. There's this guy radioing directions to me, and tells me I gotta get over to this camp. So I'm sitting across the water from the camp, looking at all these mercs through my binoculars, and wondering how I'm gonna boost that jeep. Than I start looking around, and thinking about alternate routes and where those guards in the towers are looking. And, man, I totally boosted that jeep from under their noses. I love that kind of openness.

My main complaint is the sound mix; it seems hard to hear what my radio pal is telling me, and I don't see a way to turn on subtitles. And we'll see if the story keeps my interest. But wow. Worth it for the first hour, at the very least.  12:32:06 AM  (comments []
