The cats knocked over Carrie's flipphone today, and busted the joint. So we spent lunch at the Cingular store, and came away with the modern version of Carrie's phone. We had to upgrade our service from AT&T to Cingular (because it would make too much sense for phones that only work with AT&T to now be able to work with Cingular), which also meant a new phone for me. So now I'm back on the dreaded flip phones, but have an overly stylish Motorola RAZR (the final vowel is an extra charge, I guess).

Random notes:

  • Here are instructions on using your PowerBook with the RAZR as a Bluetooth Modem for Internet over GPRS. It's as slow as ever, but it works. And Cingular actually offers an unlimited bandwidth option, unlike AT&T, so I'll actually use it.
  • It gives the appearance of being very small & slim, although it's actually slightly bigger than my beloved T616.
  • No old-school phone ring sound.
  • I have to find a new good Solitaire game. Boo.
  • The address book shows me separate lines for each phone number for each contact. I liked that the T616 collated them together.
  • It matches my PowerBook. It does look slick. It's got a nice screen.
  • Built-in GRPS AIM client.
  • Bluetooth, so y'know, I can sync my address book. That's my key required feature. Also, works with the Bluetooth headset I'd already bought.
  • The little external screen actually shows a surprising amount of data.
  • The buttons are a little hard to hit. :/
  • Speakerphone! I've wanted that for a while.
  • The charge cable is actually a mini-USB connector, so I've just got it plugged into my laptop right now. Freaky.

It's no crazy Treo, but it seems like a pretty good phone, and looks cool. So, y'know, whatever.  2:35:05 PM  (comments []
